Pernera: The Sophisticated Coastal Gem
Pernera is often seen as the "quieter, more sophisticated sibling" of neon-lit Protaras. Located on the southeastern coast of Cyprus in the Paralimni district, it is a purpose-built resort area that manages to feel like a cozy seaside village.
A glimpse into the past
Historically, Pernera was mainly farmland. Before the tourism boom of the 1980s, the area consisted of fields with windmills and small fishing huts. After the 1974 conflict, which led to the loss of the major tourist hub of Famagusta, the Republic of Cyprus developed the coastline between Paralimni and Protaras. Pernera emerged as a family-friendly alternative to the more boisterous Ayia Napa.
The vibe: Description
Pernera is defined by its interconnected bays and a beautiful coastal promenade that stretches all the way to Protaras (about a 20-30 minute walk).
Atmosphere: Relaxed, walkable and welcoming. It lacks the massive high-rises of other resorts, opting instead for smaller hotels and villas.
Target audience: It’s a magnet for families, couples and divers.
Local flavours: Typical foods
You’ll find plenty of international cuisine, but the heart of Pernera lies in the traditional Cypriot meze.
Halloumi: The iconic squeaky cheese, usually grilled.
Sheftalia: Juicy grilled sausages wrapped in cauliflower fat.
Kleftiko: Slow-roasted, fall-off-the-bone lamb, traditionally baked in clay ovens.
Fresh seafood: Specifically red mullet (Barbouni) and squid, often served as part of a fish meze near the port.
Commandaria: A full-bodied, amber-colored dessert wine that happens to be one of the oldest named wines in the world.
Things to do and see
Activities
Diving: Pernera is home to world-class dive sites, including Musan Underwater Forest (nearby) and Zenobia Wreck (accessible by boat from the port).
Boardwalk: Perfect for sunset strolls or morning jogs.
Water sports: Most bays offer paddleboarding, paragliding, and pedal boats.
Nature
The bays: Pernera Beach and Kalamies Beach are Blue Flag winners with turquoise waters and fine golden sand.
Cape Greco: Just a 10-minute drive away, this national forest park offers dramatic sea caves, hiking trails and the famous "Love Bridge" rock formation.
Shopping
Pernera's shopping is charmingly casual:
Shopping: Several shops along the main street sell locally made leather goods, Lefkara lace and beachwear.
Local produce: Small "Perivoli" (orchard) shops often sell fresh citrus, carob syrup and Cypriot honey.
Festivals and events
Although small, Pernera participates in the wider Paralimni cultural calendar:
Kataklysmos (Flood Festival): Usually in June with water games, concerts and traditional dancing in the nearby harbours.
Anthestiria: A flower festival in May that celebrates the rebirth of nature with colourful parades.
Saint Nicholas Festival: Held in the iconic blue-and-white Ayios Nikolaos Church in the harbor in honor of the patron saint of sailors.
